Modern Quality Engineering in an AI-driven World
- Elisabeth HendricksonFounder & CEOCurious Duck Digital Laboratory
It was hard enough to build quality into software before AI code generation went mainstream and AI became the must-have feature for the products and services we’re building. Agile and DevOps generally improved things across the industry over the last couple of decades, but not everywhere and not enough. The result – any organization that was struggling with surprise failures before will be drowning in risk now. It’s time to revisit the quality conversation in our modern context. Traditional models of quality assurance, rooted as they are in an inspection mindset, simply don’t work. The use of AI code generation will further strain these traditional models as more engineers produce more code faster than they ever have. Instead, leaders need to see effective quality engineering as integral to software delivery. Rather than measuring quality activities in terms of interim outputs that don’t matter like test reports and bug counts, the true measure of quality is in the strategic outcomes that do matter: SLAs/SLOs, DORA metrics, customer satisfaction, customer churn, and ultimately revenue. When seen through that lens, quality engineering becomes a competitive advantage. It’s how the organization delivers value consistently and sustainably.
New Challenges in Software Quality Brought by GenAI and LLMs
- Federico ToledoCo-founder and Chief Quality OfficerAbstracta
In recent years, few companies have introduced software leveraging the power of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) to their users. Most organizations have engaged in Proof of Concepts to explore the potential advantages offered by these innovative technologies. Thus far, our interactions have been akin to playing in a sandbox—low risk, filled with innovation, and experimentation. Moving forward, there will be a growing necessity to really test and “guarantee” the quality of such software. The challenges posed by testing these applications are distinct from those encountered in assessing “traditional” software.
This talk will delve into the emerging challenges that GenAI and LLMs bring to the world of software quality and testing. It will explore how the integration, use, or design of solutions with GenAI models pose new challenges, including data quality and bias detection, dealing with non-determinism in our test automation and privacy and security concerns. It will review some proposals that are being implemented to adjust the testing tasks to the development of such systems, including approaches to automated testing and observability.

A while ago, a friend of James Bach asked for a lesson in programming and testing on an Application Programming Interface. James invited Michael Bolton to join in, and the three started on what they presumed would be a straightforward little exercise on a site that was open to the public. As they explored, they discovered plenty of interesting surprises — and were reminded that things that look simple on the surface are often much more rich and complex than they seem.
API testing is not simply a matter of checking to make sure that simple input provides previously specified and presumably desirable output. Like all testing worthy of the name, testing through an API is an exploratory and investigative process. Join Michael Bolton as he shows you what the exploration revealed — and how you can apply the strategy ideas that the explorers developed.
