Comments and notifications
Collaborate on visual reviews with comments and notifications
App Percy helps your team collaborate faster during visual reviews. Leave comments on what you find, and notify teammates when their inputs are required.
A few things to know:
- Comments are placed on snapshots, either as a general comment on the snapshot or pinned to a specific location on the head image. Comments cannot be placed on individual screenshots.
- A comment is automatically generated when changes are requested on a snapshot.
- Once a comment is added, it persists on the snapshot in all future builds on the same branch until it is resolved. Comments only appear in current and future builds, not older ones.
Adding and managing comments
To add a comment and start a comment thread, select the icon in the snapshot header.

Note
Selecting the snapshot icon in the header for matching diffs will expand the group and prompt you to comment on the first snapshot.
You can @mention users in your App Percy organization and use emojis in comments.
To pin a comment to a specific location on the snapshot, click the comment icon to enter comment mode, then click on the head snapshot image. See Location-based comments.

Comments will show up next to snapshots by default, and snapshots with comments will be ordered before snapshots without comments.
Location-based comments
Pin comments directly on the snapshot image to point reviewers at the exact pixel where you saw an issue, instead of describing the location in words. Use snapshot-level comments for general feedback, or pin a comment to flag an issue tied to a specific spot on the image.
Quick start
- Open a snapshot in a build.
- Click the comment icon in the snapshot viewer header. App Percy enters comment mode: the cursor becomes a pin on the head image, the comment panel opens, and the view switches to overlay.
- Click anywhere on the head snapshot image (the new version). A pin appears with your initial, and a comment form opens next to it.
- Choose Note for general feedback or Bug for a defect that needs to be fixed. Type your message (
@mentionsand:emoji:are supported), then click Comment.

To exit comment mode without placing a pin, press Esc, click the exit action in the comment panel, or close the panel.
Apply to all browsers or devices
A single pin can be carried to other comparisons of the same snapshot in one click. Select Apply to all devices to carry the pin to every device for the snapshot.
Resolving a comment
To resolve a comment, click the check icon on the pin’s popover or on its card in the comment panel. The pin is removed from the image.
The comment panel has a filter dropdown to control which threads are shown:
- Unresolved (default): Open threads only
- Resolved: Closed threads only
- All: Both unresolved and resolved threads

Resolving a pinned comment does not change the snapshot’s approval state.
Things to keep in mind
- Pins live on the head (new) image and overlay only. The base image stays clean as a reference.
- Pins cannot be dragged. To move a pin, resolve the thread and create a new one at the right spot.
- Snapshot-level comments and pinned comments coexist, use whichever fits the feedback.
- Unresolved threads carry forward to later builds when the same snapshot appears (matched by name and URL).
- Pins carry across all devices for the snapshot regardless of device size.
Notifications
By default, email notifications are sent when:
- Someone @mentions you in a comment
- Someone adds a comment to a snapshot you have an open comment on
For location-based comments, @mentions follow the same notification flow as snapshot-level comments and honor your notification preferences.
You can customize your notification preferences and change your email address in your profile settings.
