Test orchestration on Maestro
Learn how test orchestration strategies on App Automate control which Maestro flows run in a build and how they run.
As test suites scale, running every test on every build can slow down release cycles and create CI bottlenecks. To maintain fast and reliable delivery, it becomes essential to optimize what tests run and how without compromising confidence.
Test orchestration determines which flows run and defines how those flows are executed. For Maestro, you enable each strategy with parameters in the builds REST API.
Supported strategies
App Automate supports the following test orchestration strategies for Maestro flows:

|---|---|
| Auto rerun | Immediately retries failed flows for a configurable number of attempts. |
| Fail fast | Stops the execution of a test suite once a failure threshold is reached. |
| Run failures only | Runs only the flows that failed in the previous build. |

Supported orchestration strategy combinations
You can combine different orchestration strategies to optimize your testing workflow for speed, stability, or efficiency. The following table highlights the most effective combinations for common workflows:
| Combination | Use case |
|---|---|
| Run failures only + Fail fast | Use for rapid debugging to verify fixes for previous failures and stop the build if those critical flows still fail. |
| Auto rerun + Fail fast | Automatically retries failed flows and aborts the build if failures persist beyond the configured threshold of allowable failures. |
Auto rerun and fail fast can be combined with any other test orchestration strategy. Fail fast counts a flow as failed only after its automatic reruns are exhausted, and run failures only records the final outcome of each flow after any reruns.
