missing-text-description
Rule Severity : Serious
Description
The missing-text-description
rule requires that all pre-recorded videos have a full text transcript. This transcript must contain the same information as the video content, making it accessible to users who cannot see or hear the video.
The text transcript acts like a screenplay. It includes all dialogue, descriptions of non-speech sounds, and visual information like context, actions, and expressions. This ensures users receive a complete representation of the content.
This rule aligns with WCAG Success Criterion 1.2.1 (Audio-only and Video-only (Prerecorded)), which requires a transcript for pre-recorded media.
Examples
In the following example, a pre-recorded video is provided without a corresponding text transcript. This violates the missing-text-description
rule because users who are deaf or cannot play the video have no way to access the content.
In the following corrected example, a link to a full text transcript is included below the video. This allows all users to access the same information regardless of their ability to play or hear the video.
How to fix?
To fix violations of the missing-text-description
rule, you must provide a full text transcript for your pre-recorded video content. Follow these steps:
- Create a transcript: Transcribe all dialogue and non-speech sounds from the video.
- Describe visual information: Add descriptions of all visual elements, such as on-screen text, actions, expressions, and the video’s context.
- Ensure completeness: The transcript should convey all information present in the video, including any interactive elements or links.
- Make it available: Place the transcript on the same page as the video or provide a link to it.
