Test on Internal Networks

BrowserStack enables you to run your RSpec automated tests on your internal development environments, on localhost, and from behind a corporate firewall. This feature is called “Local Testing”.

Local Testing establishes a secure connection between your machine and the BrowserStack cloud. Once you set up Local Testing, all URLs work out of the box, including HTTPS URLs and those behind a proxy or firewall.

Note: Code samples in this guide can be found in the rspec-browserstack sample repo on GitHub

Configuring your RSpec tests for Local Testing takes just few simple steps:

  1. Install the BrowserStack Local Testing bindings:

     gem install browserstack-local

  2. Next, you need to update your RSpec config file, rspec-browserstack/config/local.config.yml (in sample repo), and set the browserstack.local capability to true:
    local.config.yml
     server: "hub-cloud.browserstack.com"
     user: "YOUR_USERNAME"
     key: "YOUR_ACCESS_KEY"

     common_caps:
       "browserstack.local": true
       "name": "Bstack-[Rspec] Local Test"

     browser_caps:
       -
         "browser": "chrome"

  3. Run a sample test case to check whether the Local test connection has been setup properly. You can use the following sample test case, which can be found in the repo under rspec-browserstack/spec/ directory:

    local_test.rb
     describe "BrowserStack Local Testing" do
       it "can check tunnel working" do
         @driver.navigate.to "http://bs-local.com:45691/check"
         @driver.title
         expect(@driver.page_source).to match(/Up and running/)
       end
     end

  4. You can now run your RSpec test using BrowserStack Local with the following command:

     # Run using rake
     bundle exec rake local
