Release notes for a11y-engine 2.0

The release initiates support for WCAG 2.2.

New rules

The following new rules are added to the a11y-engine:

• target-size: Provides support for WCAG 2.2 and SC 2.5.8. This rule mandates that touch targets must be sufficiently large and have enough spacing so that they can be easily touched without touching adjacent components.
• aria-braille-equivalent: Ensures that aria-braille attributes must only be used with corresponding non-empty ARIA labels.
• aria-conditional-attr: Ensures that ARIA attributes must be used in accordance with the element’s role.
• aria-deprecated-role: Ensures that non-deprecated ARIA roles must not be used.
• aria-prohibited-attr: Ensures that only permitted ARIA attributes are used.
• frame-title-unique: Ensures frames to have distinct title attributes. This rule was moved from Best Practices to WCAG rules.
• meta-viewport: Moved from best practices to rules to ensure that customer websites support older devices with zooming/scaling disabled. Adds support for SC 1.4.4.
• no-autoplay-audio: Ensures controls are provided to stop automatically played audios and videos. Adds support for SC 1.4.2.
• meta-refresh-no-exceptions: Ensures that page refresh should be executed only using javascript.

Deprecated rules

The following rules are deprecated in this release:

• aria-roledescription
• audio-caption
• duplicate-id-active
• duplicate-id

Other changes

• The earlier rule empty-table-header was moved to best practices. This is because an empty header tag does not fail SC 1.3.1.
• The scrollable-region-focusable rule now also supports SC 2.1.3.
• Other rule enhancements, changes to success criteria, ruleset mapping, and severity.
• Bug fixes.
