TLS 1.0 & 1.1 handshake errors

Learn how to resolve TLS 1.0 & 1.1 handshake errors.

What is TLS?

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is an encrypted and authenticated protocol designed to protect Internet communications. It ensures the confidentiality and integrity of data in transit from clients to servers that exchange information.

What is TLS Handshake?

A TLS handshake is the process of initiating a communication session using TLS. It involves multiple steps, as the client and server exchange the information necessary for completing the handshake and making further conversation possible.

TLS 1.0 & 1.1 handshake errors?

As a result of changing regulatory requirements and emerging security vulnerabilities in TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1, it has been deprecated by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as of March 25, 2021.

Starting 12 May, 2023, BrowserStack will stop supporting Automate sessions from desktops running TLS v1.0 or v1.1-enabled OS versions. A TLS handshake error will be returned in response to such efforts to start a session.

BrowserStack recommends that customers remove TLS 1.0/1.1 dependencies in their environments and disable TLS 1.0 and 1.1 at the operating system level where possible.

Resolution/Workaround:

  • We advise starting Automate sessions from any computer or gadget that can handle TLS 1.2 or later.
  • Users will need to update both, your operating system and browser to a version that supports TLS 1.2 or higher.
  • Refer to this article for details on TLS 1.2
