App testing

Test iOS and Android apps with Test Companion. Generate test cases, automate them on real devices, and fix failures from your IDE.

Test Companion runs your app on real BrowserStack devices, captures the UI hierarchy and screenshots, and uses that context to generate test cases, write automation scripts in any framework, and diagnose failures. You stay in your IDE the whole time.

Test Companion can:

  • Generate test cases from a PRD, user story, or by exploring your live app.
  • Convert test cases into automation scripts (Appium, Espresso, XCUITest, Maestro, and others).
  • Diagnose failing app tests from CI builds or local runs and suggest code fixes.
  • Generate scripts directly from a natural language description of a flow.

Describe what you need. Test Companion picks the right capability based on your prompt.

How it works

App testing uses a different mechanism than web testing. Instead of driving a browser, Test Companion starts a real-device session on BrowserStack App Automate, installs your app, and interacts with it through the Appium driver.

For each task, Test Companion:

  1. Starts a real-device session for your selected app.
  2. Captures the UI hierarchy (an XML tree of every visible element with its accessibility ID, resource ID, class, text, and bounds) and screenshots.
  3. Uses both signals to identify elements reliably, even when accessibility IDs are missing.
  4. Produces the requested output (test cases, scripts, or fixes) directly in your IDE.

The dual UI hierarchy and screenshot approach is what lets Test Companion pick a stable locator strategy and generate scripts that run on the first try.

Switch to App mode

Test Companion starts in Web mode. Click App at the bottom of the panel to switch.

After you switch, a Select App button appears next to the toggle. Click it to upload a new app file or pick one already in your BrowserStack account.

You must connect an app before you can generate, automate, or fix anything.

Supported app formats

Format Platform Description
.apk Android Standard Android application package.
.aab Android Android App Bundle, Google’s publishing format.
.xapk Android Extended APK that includes additional resources.
.ipa iOS Standard iOS application archive.

You can upload a new build directly or select from apps already uploaded to your BrowserStack account, including builds previously sent to App Automate.
