Debbie O'Brien is a true visionary bridging the gap between web development, testing, and artificial intelligence. With a rich history ranging from frontend architecture to serving as a technical program management at Microsoft, Debbie has been a relentless advocate for Playwright end-to-end testing, Playwright MCP, and AI agents. Now focusing deeply on Applied AI and Developer Education—and recognized as a Google Developer Expert (GDE)—her work empowers developers to integrate AI seamlessly into their workflows. Whether through her blog, her YouTube channel, or her extensive open-source contributions, Debbie's commitment to community growth and technological innovation makes her a standout Icon of Quality.

We spoke with Debbie about using AI to verify its own work, the importance of AI proficiency for new testers, and how she uses bots to optimize her learning time.

Keeping up with all things new, as everything changes so fast. We are living in times never seen before, and it is exciting because we can now do anything we want.

Using AI to verify its own work, which is in a way testing without actually writing a test.

It's a must, but there are still gaps. Soon there won't be, and we need to be ready for that. We need to keep designing systems to ensure our agents can do a great job—trusting them, fixing them when they fail, and improving them.

Be AI-proficient in every way possible. Understand how to write tests, but more importantly, how to ask an agent to write a test and how to ensure that test is a good one.

I use AI to help me scout for new things, keep a record of what I should learn, and remind me to find the time. Knowing what to spend time on is important, so I have my bots read articles, watch videos, summarize them, and tell me if I should watch them or if they are similar to something I have already watched. Time is precious, so it needs to be used well.

I would have loved to have AI when I started my career, as it makes learning so much easier and reduces barriers so you are capable of anything. We learned the hard way, and going forward it doesn't mean others have to, but I do appreciate the fact that I didn't have AI and was forced to push myself to learn and achieve the unachievable.

Sports. I used to have so much more time for sports, but with twin toddlers my time is even more limited. Before they arrived, I used to cycle a lot. Mallorca is a beautiful place for cycling, and just climbing a mountain, challenging yourself when you think you are never going to make it, and then enjoying the downhill with such peace and beautiful views is very rewarding. Spending so much time on a bike and out in nature is great for thinking and creativity.
