Over the past few months, we’ve spoken with hundreds of engineering leaders about AI in software testing. Different industries. Different company sizes. Different levels of maturity.

But the same concerns kept coming up. Which tools actually work? How do we integrate AI without disrupting existing workflows? Are teams seeing real returns, or is this still mostly experimentation?

To find out, we surveyed more than 250 CTOs, VPs of Engineering, and QA leaders across the US, UK, and Europe. The result is The State of AI in Software Testing 2026, a detailed look at how teams are adopting AI, where they’re succeeding, and where they’re getting stuck.

What the Data Actually Shows

Here's what jumped out from our research: 61 percent of organizations already use AI across most of their testing workflows. Meanwhile, 18 percent are seeing returns over 100 percent. But higher spending alone doesn’t guarantee stronger returns. It's coming from teams that made more disciplined implementation choices about how they approached AI adoption.

Why Some Teams Pull Ahead

When we compared high-performing teams with the rest of the market, clear patterns emerged:

  • First, tool selection matters more than tool sophistication. Organizations seeing the strongest returns consistently prioritized integration.
  • Second, integration remains the biggest obstacle. Across industries and regions, 37 percent of teams cited connecting AI tools with existing workflows as their top challenge. Budget constraints ranked fifth at 32 percent. For most teams, the barrier is operational, not financial.
  • Third, where early wins really come from. The strongest initial results aren’t driven by flashy experiments. They come from a small set of core testing workflows where AI quietly delivers speed and stability.
  • Fourth, maturity compounds results. Organizations that have been using AI in testing for more than four years are 83 percent more likely to achieve over 100 percent ROI. Early gains tend to come from automation and efficiency. Long-term returns come from system-level adoption.
