Introduction

Rubix is a European multinational company that specializes in the distribution of industrial supplies, products, and services for industrial engineering, maintenance, and operations. With a presence in 22 countries through 20 different e-commerce websites, Rubix relies heavily on its online presence to engage with customers, which means that it is crucial for its websites and apps to provide a smooth and seamless user experience.

To ensure that its websites and apps are functioning properly across different devices and browsers, Rubix turned to BrowserStack for its testing needs and unlocked several benefits on multiple fronts – automation, release speed, device and OS coverage, cost-effectiveness, and more.

The challenge

Lack of test automation that slowed down time-to-market

As Rubix started expanding its e-commerce business, relying on manual testing for its websites was not enough and gradually posed challenges in scaling up. The Digital QA team experienced a bottleneck as they struggled to execute manual tests for bi-weekly releases. The slow pace of testing adversely impacted release frequency.

Another roadblock was reproducing customer issues as some of the key accounts, working in the security domain, used specific versions of browsers and devices that were difficult to access for testing, says Harold Jacquot, Digital Group Delivery Manager at Rubix. It was imperative that Rubix tested on diverse device-browser combinations to ensure a seamless customer experience.

The solution

Easy-to-implement test automation solution

The Digital QA team at Rubix tried experimenting with BrowserStack and figured out quickly that it was easy to use for developers and non-developers alike. “We were capable of accessing test environments [instantly] because BrowserStack whitelisted some IP addresses on both sides, and we figured it out in few weeks that BrowserStack helped us optimize and reduce the testing time,” says Harold.

Rubix implemented automation testing successfully using BrowserStack’s real device cloud, eliminating the need to set up their own device labs. The Digital QA team restructured to include manual and automation testers running tests on multiple device-browser combinations. With the video logs feature, they were able to pinpoint the error at an accelerated speed without wasting time on searching for bugs.

The Digital QA team was able to replicate customer issues as they could access the specific device and browsers used by their customers. Hence ensuring seamless customer experience for their key accounts across websites and mobile applications.

The impact

A cost-efficient solution that is scalable

Since implementing BrowserStack, Rubix has been able to run extensive tests on real devices and browsers to ensure that any UI issues or bugs in critical workflows are caught early in the development process. This has significantly improved the customer experience and reduced the risk of revenue loss due to bugs slipping through to production.

In addition to improving the testing process, BrowserStack has also helped Rubix save time and money. Maintaining an internal device lab can be a costly and time-consuming endeavor, but with BrowserStack, the team has instant access to a wide range of real devices at a fraction of the cost.

Rubix has successfully implemented test automation with Selenium and BrowserStack, increasing the number of licenses from 5 to 10. With parallelization, the Digital QA team has succeeded in decreasing the testing time, pushing new releases in bi-weekly sprints, and incorporating nightly test execution to speed up release validation. “In the past, it took one or two days manually to test each and every e-commerce website, and today it takes a time of one or 2 hours per e-commerce website on average,” mentions Harold.

Rubix is extremely satisfied with its partnership with BrowserStack and plans to continue using the platform in the future. As the company continues to improve and optimize its e-commerce offerings, having a reliable and hassle-free testing solution like BrowserStack is crucial for ensuring a smooth and seamless user experience for its customers.
